ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The aim of this study was to explain the patient assessment experiences of the medical staff responsible for customer satisfaction and quality improvement at their respective medical institutions. @*Methods@#This was a qualitative study using a focus group with quality improvement or custom service department managers. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted with seventeen participants divided into three focus group interviews from July 3 to 5, 2017. Each interview took an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Transcribed data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. @*Results@#Base on the analysis, four categories and eight themes were derived. The categories were: 1) what is the quality of hospital service? 2) between directionality and timeliness, 3) variations in recognition and application, and 4) changing in hospital culture @*Conclusion@#The assessment of patient's experience has spread a patient-centered culture and elicited significant changes in the behavior of medical and hospital staff. However, the survey instruments and procedures for assessing patient experiences need to be continuously improved, and additional research is required to secure evidence related to patient experiences.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the Nursing management educational objectives and nurse duties required to be achieved in the nursing management curriculum in nursing job analysis. METHODS: Nursing management educational objectives and knowledge to be achieved in a nursing management curriculum in nursing job analysis were analyzed using Anderson's Revision of Bloom's taxonomy of Educational Objectives. RESULTS: The analysis showed that 172 (59.3%) of the 290 educational objectives of the nursing management corresponded to ‘conceptual knowledge’ and 167 (57.6%) of the ‘cognitive process dimension’ were ‘understanding’. In the job analysis, 29 out of 57 (50.9%) were procedural knowledge. The finding indicates that ‘health promotion and maintenance’ duty was excluded from the job analysis, but included in the nursing management curriculum and objectives. CONCLUSION: The results of this study contribute to the foundation of nursing management as a practical study by analyzing the goal of nursing management learning in connection with the job analysis required in the field.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop a nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system, required for accreditation of nursing education. METHODS: A methodological design was used. To ensure the theoretical validity of the evaluation system, learning objectives for nursing education programs and job descriptions for nurses in Korea were verified by analyzing the relationships in the five attributes of the nursing leadership concept. The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was developed based on the Kim & Park's developmental model (2008). RESULTS: The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was established, including implementation level, education curriculum, level of performance, evaluation method, rubrics, and Close-the-Loop. CONCLUSION: The developed evaluation system can be actively used in nursing education, and contribute to enhancing the leadership competencies of nursing students and graduate nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the degree of Positive psychological capital, Organizational commitment, Customer orientation of clinical nurses, and to identify correlations between these variables. METHODS: Participants were 230 nurses working in three hospitals located in Seoul. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation, and Multiple Regression. RESULTS: Mean scores were 3.32 (5 point scale) for Positive psychological capital, 3.03 (5 point scale) for Organizational commitment, 3.71 (5 point scale) for Customer orientation. Positive psychological capital correlated positively with Organizational commitment (r=.29, p<.001) and Customer orientation (r=.58, p<.001). Organizational commitment correlated positively with Customer orientation (r=.28, p<.001). Positive psychological capital had a significant influence on Customer orientation. and these combinations explained 34.2% of the variance in Customer orientation (F=25.68, p<.001). Organizational commitment had a mediating effect between Positive psychological capital and Customer orientation. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest a need for strategies to improve Customer orientation by enhancing the Positive psychological capital of nurses. Furthermore, study to develop and apply a Positive psychological capital promotion program should be conducted.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to provide a concept analysis of nursing leadership. METHODS: The concept analysis process of Walker and Avant (2011) was used. A review of the literature was conducted using several databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, Ovid-Medline, DBpia, and KISS. The databases were searched using the following terms 'nursing leadership', 'nursing' & 'leadership', and 'nurse & 'leadership', and for studies published from January 2000 to March 2015. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. RESULTS: Analysis of these studies indicated nursing leadership attributes were individual growth, collaboration, nursing excellence, creative problem solving, and influence. The antecedents of nursing leadership were the individual maturity level, construction of mutual trust and confidential relationships, and a job requirement. The consequences were improvement in nursing productivity, development of a supportive work environment, and satisfaction with the nursing profession. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study provide a definite concept of nursing leadership. The findings also provide the theoretical evidence for the development of nursing leadership competencies in nursing students and professional nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The core of accreditation for nursing education is to improve the ability and quality of graduates through a CQI system based on outcomes. For program outcomes of nursing education accreditation criterion, it is necessary to understand the relationship among education assessment, objective and curriculum. METHODS: The focus of this study was on program outcomes and the assessment. First measures for improving the general problems of program outcomes associated with the assessment system were stated. Detailed measure for practicing program outcomes, the assessment system and the assessment tool using Rubrics were discussed. RESULTS: Detailed measure were established for practicing the program outcomes, assessment system and assessment tool, which makes use of rubrics, program outcome No 3 of the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education. CONCLUSION: Therefore it is expected that the assessment system established in this study will allow universities to conduct program outcomes and assessment.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of Sargassum confusum extracts on the reduction of body fat for eight weeks in overweight women (BMI > or = 23 kg/m2). METHODS: Subjects were classified by double-blind randomized trial as the control group (C group, n = 14) and the Sargassum confusum extract supplementation group (SC group, n = 16), which consumed 12 tablets per day. Questionnaires related to their health status were assessed twice (week 0 and week 8). Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-recall method and body compositions were measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer. In addition, we assessed the anti-obesity effect and the occurrence possibility of health risk factors during the supplementation periods by hematological and clinical analysis of blood. RESULTS: Waist circumference and body fat (%) were significantly decreased in the SC group. Serum leptin level was also significantly decreased in the SC group. Defecation frequency was significantly increased in the SC group. The above results indicate that Sargassum confusum extract supplementation improves overweight on visceral fat and blood leptin level by increasing bowel movement. These results imply a decrease of health risk factors in overweight women. Seven subjects withdrew from the study due to adverse events; however, no differences regarding adverse events were observed between the control and treatment group. CONCLUSION: Therefore, Sargassum confusum extract is a plausible effective agent for body fat reduction in humans.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the major trends in research studies in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration from 2010 to 2012. METHODS: A review using analysis criteria developed by researchers was done of 132 studies published between 2010 and 2012. Research design, participants, research domain, and keywords were analyzed from the Journal of Korean Nursing Administration. RESULTS: Job satisfaction, stress, organizational commitment, safety, turnover, nursing education, and performance were found to be major keywords. Of the research in the Journal, quantitative methods were used in 93.2% of studies. The major setting and participants were hospitals (58.2%) and nurses (65.5%) respectively. Prevalent analysis methods used were t-test, ANOVA, correlation, regression, chi-square, AMOS, and factor analysis. Major domains in the articles were: controlling, directing, staffing, nursing management education, and professionalism & legal principles. CONCLUSION: Through this study, the research trends in nursing administration were identified, but there is a need to include more of the following topics in future research: new concepts in nursing policy, enhanced deliberations of IRB, rationalization of the effects in sample size calculations, theoretical development of planning and organizing, and development of interventions for management support of the nursing management process.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to explore factors related to amount of service use for elders with long-term care needs. METHODS: A descriptive-correlation design was used. The sample included 259 elders and their primary caregivers who had cared for the elders for at least 6 months. Data on long-term care need assessment, service use and interviews with primary caregivers were analyzed. RESULTS: There was no significant relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics and the amount of services use. Amount of service use differed significantly by Long-term care classification. The mean scores for class 1, 2 and 3 were 22.68, 21.47 and 17.87 days respectively. Primary caregiver relationship with the elders and the number of family-friend helpers were also significant. Multivariate regression analysis showed that gender, marital status, activities of daily living, cognitive impairment, and secondary caregiver support explained 17% of the total variance of service use among these elders (F=3.50, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that critical factors including secondary caregiver support and individual background, and other functional dependencies except for physical function should be considered in accurately predicting the amount of service use for community dwelling elders with long-term care needs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was designed to develop quality outcome indicators for nursing homes and community-based home care that would contribute to an appropriate evaluation and improvement of quality of long term care in Korea. METHODS: The preliminary quality indicators of long term care were developed from a literature review and clinical expert panel. A content validity testing was done using a panel of experts who were selected from academic and clinical field of long-term care. The final quality indicators were confirmed after application in four nursing homes and four home care agencies to test clinical validity. RESULTS: The preliminary quality indicators consisted of 3 domains and 19 indicators. The final quality indicators were composed of 4 domains and 17 indicators. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the feasibility of outcome quality indicators in long term care. These quality indicators can be effectively used to evaluate the quality of nursing home and home care and to improve the quality of care in the Korean long-term care system.
